A Little About Bob

I was brought into this world by parents Buddy and Gloria (who would later opt for a deniability clause) on September 4, 1963 (which would make me ~gasp~ years old) in the motor city, Detroit, Michigan (Yes! I’m willing to admit it!)

I moved to Punta Gorda, Florida in 1973 (County officials tried to ban me.  All attempts proved unsuccessful).  I graduated from Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda in June 1981.  (Rumor has it several teachers are still undergoing therapy).  I was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Florida in Tampa in May, 1986. (No proof of bribery was ever substantiated.)

I Blame…uh...credit my beloved Uncle Chuck Burns for first allowing the “radio bug” to bite at age 11. (Uncle Chuck worked at KIX Country loooong before it ever was KIX Country).  I began my radio career as a part timer in 1982 and have flourished (that is, kept gainful employment) in the field ever since.  I have been with KIX Country from day one in 1992 (What was the boss thinking?)  I was nominated for the Country Music Association Broadcast Personality of the Year in 1994. (that bribe I admit to!)   I have been with my current partner, Todd Matthews, since 1996.  (All previous partners have since joined French Foreign Legion!)

DUBAI DAY TWO: FIGHT PREP
Thursday 02-07-2008 3:39pm ET
A lot of people told me before I left to make sure I had fun and take pictures.....well that I will probably do on Saturday as it is my free day.  for now, for the most part, its all business.  today was the official weigh in and press conference for the show.  I sat down and did individual interviews with all the fighters as it looks now like I am going to be doing play by play announcing for the tv broadcast.  its on Dubai sports tv on a two hour delay but not back in the US.  hopefully it will be aired at a future date.   but i digress....i was able to get my picture taken with Michael Moorer, the former hvt champ, that will go up on the website when I get back.   most of everything else was business.  They are all excited about the show over here, its only the second ever professional boxing match in the entire persian gulf region.

I plan to call the morning show around 7:45 am eastern....which will be about 5:45 pm here...just prior to the doors opening for the show.  hopefully it will all work out.   the fight will take place probably  before most of you have lunch.  weird isnt it?  time changes.

then sat i will set out to sightsee and shop and yes take lots of pictures to be displayed back home.

one more note.  you have not seen traffic till you have seen dubai.  lol.   new york?  a rose garden.  LA?  childs play.  what should be a ten min drive can take over an hour.  only good thing is cabbies can only charge you by the mile over here...not by the minute.

thanks again for everyones interest.  listen for the call in the am

BACK TO DUBAI
Wednesday 02-06-2008 9:40am ET
Hello everyone.   well when you travel somewhere around the world the first time, you wonder if you will ever get the chance to go back.   in this case, I am back in Dubai for the second time.

my trip over was uneventful, just long.  although not as long as advertised, it was supposed to be 15 hours from Houston, Texas but i think it took a mere 13 1/2 hours. lol.    there are several changes to adapt to here, the biggest being the time change, it is 9 hours ahead over here.  so while todd is taking care of the morning show.....its late afternoon here.

the weather is wonderful...no humidity and in the upper 60s near 70.  from what i have been able to see, it just continues to get bigger and bigger here...so much construction.....tall buildings and sky scrapers everwhere.  coming in last nite i was able to see the burj tower which is up to 156 stories now...it was about 110 last year in march.  its an amazing sight.

today was quiet, i got brave and tried an area restraunt...the al sham rose rest.  had a nice chicken dinner with some kind of flat bread, the served hummus with it but i declined.  lol

i ran into michael moorer and his crew in the lobby and talked.  michael is the former two time heavyweight champion of the world who will be fighting in the main event friday.

tommorow, i will head to center city for the press conference and weigh in for the fight.  it will be taped for television air at some point, shown over here on a two hour delay on dubai sports tv.

thanks to everyone for their well wishes, i will update my visit each day.
NEW YEAR STARTS WITH ESPN 2
Monday 01-07-2008 9:51am ET
I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe holiday season.

A lot of people have been asking me if i will be back on TV anytime soon with my ring announcing duties and the answer is thankfully "yes"!  The year is actually starting off in a big way with a pair of appearences on ESPN Friday Night Fights.   The first show is this week (friday the 11th) at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Hollywood.  The very next friday (the 18th), I'll be announcing the show from Mallory Square in Key West.  Both shows are schedule to air at 9 pm on ESPN 2.   I hope you get to watch and I so much appreciate the support and all the kind words.
